2006 QUEENSLAND STATE CUP CHAMPIONS CROWNED
The Queensland State Cup of Touch Football culminated with an exciting round of finals games in the eight divisions on offer at the Quad Park Corporation Complex, Nicklan Way, Kawana on Sunday 3 December 2006.
Kawana claimed back to back titles in the Men's Open division with a strong 8 - 5 victory over Toowoomba in the final.
After dominating the competition in the round games, the Sunny Coast natives recorded a strong 11 - 2 win in their semi-final over Mackay to set up a Grand final appointment with Toowoomba who produced some enterprising play during the two day tournament.
Kawana's Australian Open Mixed 2007 World Cup representative Ben Roberts was in commanding form and collected the Player of the Final Award in a cohesive team effort from the star studded locals.
In the Women's Open division, Redcliffe Colts collected their first major piece of silver ware for sometime with a thrilling 5-4 victory over Griffith Sharks in the Women's Open Grand Final.
Colts defeated Crushers in their semi-final, and Sharks slid past Country Club United to set up an absorbing grand final battle.
Colts Australian Open Mixed 2007 World Cup Co-Captain Mary Steele produced a fantastic all round performance to collect the Player of the Final Award to cap an undefeated weekend for the team that has suffered numerous close and painful losses in recent years in big games at various tournaments.
The Colts girls and Coach Craig Morrow were ecstatic to have finally shaken the "gorilla off their back" to claim a major tournament trophy.
In the Mixed Open division, competition heavyweights Figjam and Rebels progressed through their respective finals series games to set up a free flowing clash in the State Cup Grand final.
Rebels prevailed 8-5 to snare the 2006 State Cup crown.
In the Under 20 Men's final the "rep heavy" Chalkies combination prevailed 5 - 3 over a spirited Toowoomba outfit who never stopped trying.
Redcliffe Colts made it a double celebration for their Women's teams, when they recorded an 8 - 2 victory over a youthful Logan Natives team who did extremely well to make the final in the Women's 20s division.
Chantelle Gilchrist has done a wonderful job as coach, steering the Colts girls to the double in the Brisbane Metropolitan Touch Association's South East Queensland Touch League Division 2 Premiership, and the 2006 Queensland Women's 20s State Cup title.
The Men's 30s final produced a close 5-4 verdict for local team Kawana over Red Hot Welding.
The Men's 40s title went to the Ipswich team over Mackay.
Led by Hall of Fame member and former Australain Men's Captain Scott Notley, the Ipswich boys had too much class in the end and claimed a deserved victory.
In the Men's 50s final Redcliffe had an 8-4 victory over a committed Toowoomba line-up.
The Women's 30s title went to Brothers.
In hot and difficult conditions, teams and referees produced wonderful efforts across the board in a weekend of highly entertaining and exciting Touch Football.
